The North East is full of beauty, both natural and man-made, it’s fair to say that the entire region is picture perfect. With that being said, it’s jam packed with stunning places perfect for photography lovers - so whether you’re an amateur or a professional, here are some incredible places to add to your snap list.
Grey Street
Named as one of the most instagrammed streets in the UK, and one of my personal favourite places, is Grey Street. This historic main street in Newcastle City Centre is lined with beautiful Georgian architecture and is beloved by local residents and visitors alike. Grey Street is home to the Theatre Royal and a range of restaurants, bars and cafes, galleries and independent shops. Next time you’re in the city, take a leisurely walk down and admire its beauty - and perhaps take a snap or two!
Roseberry Topping
A distinctive and iconic landmark that sports terrific views across North Yorkshire and Cleveland. Though a ground-level view of the hill is great as is, plenty of people take on the little challenge of walking the steep hill, simply because of the spectacular views once at the top. The surrounding areas are bursting with wildlife from bluebells to hundred-year-old oak and ash trees, it’s the perfect setting for a relaxing stroll.
Bowes Museum
The Bowes Museum has a nationally renowned art collection and is situated in the town of Barnard Castle, Durham. Whilst the art inside is beautiful, the building it’s held in and the surrounding gardens are absolutely magnificent. Built in 1892 and designed by two architects, French architect Jules Pellechet and John Edward Watson of Newcastle, the building is richly modelled, with large windows, engaged columns, projecting bays, and mansard roofs typical of the French Second Empire, set within landscaped gardens. As you can imagine, it’s a very popular wedding destination as it makes for some incredible, fairy-tale-like photos.
Auckland Castle
Auckland Castle, located in Bishop Auckland, County Durham is one of the best-preserved bishops’ palaces in the whole of Europe and is at the centre of The Auckland Project. If you’re a fan of the Georgian Gothic look, then this is definitely a place for you. The castle is also surrounded by a deer park which retains many of the medieval elements including the fish ponds and woodland paths which are well worth the exploration.
Sycamore Gap

The Sycamore Gap Tree or Robin Hood Tree is a sycamore tree standing next to Hadrian's Wall near Crag Lough in Northumberland. It is located in a dramatic dip in the landscape and described as one of the most photographed trees in the UK - so perfect for photography lovers! It really is a thing of majestic beauty and a must-see if you’re visiting Northumberland. There are a few walking trails surrounding Sycamore Gap so depending on your abilities, you have a choice.
